Goons demand ‘hafta’ from Pune ex-mayor’s son, held

Police said suspects were extorting money from other stall owners in Kalyani Nagar for the past one year as well.

The city police on Tuesday arrested two goons who allegedly threatened the son of former mayor Mohansingh Rajpal and demanded hafta of Rs 9,000 every month for operating fast-food stalls in Kalyani Nagar. For the past one year, the goons had been threatening other stall owners in the area and collecting hafta. But there was no complaint and apparently no police action against them.

The law caught up with them when they threatened and demanded hafta from former mayor's son Jagatsingh Rajpal. Jagatsingh filed a complaint against the goons at the anti-extortion cell of Pune police crime branch.

Police team led by inspector Sachin Sawant arrested the goons identified as Mahadev Eknath Shinde (38) of Mahadev Nagar and his aide Manoj Indrachand Jedia (33) of Yerawada on Tuesday. The police also paraded the duo in some areas of Kalyani Nagar to allay apprehension of stall owners.

Inspector Sawant said both Shinde and Jedia were historysheeters. "Both have cases of attempt to murder and rioting against their names. We have seized a car, two cellphones, a knife and a baseball stick from the suspects," said Sawant.

Police said on January 20, Shinde and Jedia allegedly threatened Jagatsingh at his fast food stalls near Life Style building in Kalyani Nagar. The suspects said they would damage Jagatsingh's van if he does not give them Rs 9,000 every month.

Police said the suspects had been extorting Rs 2,000 and more from other stall owners in the area. The stall owners never filed any complaint against them as they were afraid. Police have arrested the duo under Sections 387, 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
