Gopal Subramaniam reinstated as amicus curae in JNU polls case

In a major development in the Jawaharlal Nehru University students union election case,former Solicitor General of India,Gopal Subramaniam has been reinstated as amicus curae. With the deadlock in the JNU elections broken,students are hopeful of an early election.

Member of the Joint Struggle Committee (JSC) and former SFI,JNU unit president Roshan Kishore received a call from Gopal Subramaniam’s office at 7.30 pm on Tuesday inviting the JSC to start negotiations with the Supreme Court.

Subramaniam confirmed that the court has asked him to continue as amicus curae in the case,which he has agreed.

Sources told Newsline that he is likely to submit an application in court,requesting minor deviations from the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.

In a University General Body Meeting (UGBM),convened for the first time since September 6,2010 in the campus,ABVP,NSUI,AISA,AISF and SFI walked out saying that “in the wake of the new developments,the agenda for which the UGBM was called stands cancelled as the court has allowed us to enter in to negotiations.” The UGBM was convened to hold a referendum for elections on student’s demand.

Vice-Chancellor,JNU V K Sopory said,“It is nice that we may finally be able to hold elections. I’m unsure of this year but perhaps next year.” He also said he hoped for fast results from the judiciary.

Democratic Students Union,Progressive Students Union and Students For Resistance completely rejected the idea of conducting elections in accordance with the Lyngdoh panels guidelines.

The Supreme Court had ordered a stay on JNU’s election process on October 24,2008 and elections were suspended from 2009 onwards for refusing to follow the Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendations.

The SC stay on JNU’s election process still continues.
