Gopalakrishnan’s research centre to work on new model

We can leverage what we have and can come out with new products in future: Gopalakrishnan

Executive co-Chairman of Infosys Ltd,S Gopalakrishnan today advocated the setting up of a research centre in India to evolve a new model of growth for the developing world with the help of technology.

He said the new model is needed, through the leveraging of technology for products, services and solutions,as things like per capita income and status of development are different in the developing world and the West. He said there is a “great, great opportunity” for the new model of development and suggested that India — Karnataka in particular — could take the lead and work on innovation in this direction.

Developing such a model would enable India to make significant contribution to the world. “We can leverage what we have here (the strong base of IT professionals) and can come out with new products relevant in the future of the world”,Gopalakrishnan added.

He said he wondered what would happen if the people of the developing world such as India and China start consuming like their counterparts in the developed countries.

“…if we all start consuming as the citizens of the developed countries, can the world afford? Will the impact on environment (be) sustainable? Will we destroy the world?”,Gopalakrishnan asked at the inaugural function of Bangalore IT.biz,Karnataka’s flagship annual ICT event.

“We will not have enough water (in the world)” if the people of developing countries start taking shower daily, just like their western counterparts,he said in a lighter vein.

“There is a huge market not just in India but around the (developing) world (targeting five billion people). This (developing new products, solutions and services for the developing world) is a must. This is a necessity,” he added.
