Governor S C Jamir has summoned a two-day Assembly Session on December 17 and 18. On the first day, the House will be adjourned after paying condolence to Chotila MLA Vasram Khorani, who passed away recently. On December 18, the House will transact business as usual.
Sources in the Assembly Secretariat said on Thursday that the government was likely to bring in two Bills — one related to providing 50 per cent reservation to women in local self-governing bodies in Gujarat and the other amending the Bombay Prohibition Act, which the Governor has returned to the government for reconsideration. The Bill was passed in the last Assembly session, seeking to amend the Prohibition Act and proposing death penalty and life imprisonment for those found guilty of manufacturing, selling and supply of hooch or spurious liquor, which results in death.
Ex-MLAs, MPs to be honoured
The government will set a new precedent by inviting all living ex-MLAs and MPs who have been elected from the state since 1960 — the year Gujarat attained statehood, to the Assembly. BJP Chief Whip R C Faldu said: “The sitting MLAs and MPs as also the former ones, who are alive, will be invited to the Assembly on December 16, a day before the two-day session begins.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi is expected to move a resolution in the House on the Swarnim Gujarat celebrations to mark the 50 years of statehood. The ex-MLAs and MPs, including former Chief Ministers, will be felicitated on the occasion. Other details of the programme are being worked out.”
