  • Ahead of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s scheduled two-day visit to West Midnapore beginning November 7, Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi today summoned state Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti and sought a report on the current security situation in Lalgarh.

‘The Governor called me to ask about the latest situation in Lalgarh. It is not proper for me to say anything more,” said the chief secretary at the Writers’ Buildings later.

Sources said chief secretary briefed the Governor on the ongoing operation to flush out Maoists in an around Lalgarh as well as the development initiatives undertaken by the state government for the uplift of tribals in the region.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Partha Chatterjee also met the Governor this evening and reportedly told him that the state government has failed to maintain law and order in the state. He is said to have cited instances of fresh violence in Arambagh and Khanakul. “I have requested the Governor to ask the government to take immediate action. I highlighted the fact that the state government is not only sitting idle but is also instigating the attacks,” he said.
