Govt asks airlines to fly out of EU carbon scheme

New EU emission rules,effective from January 1,2012,stipulate all flights in and out of Europe to pay for their emissions.

The government has asked all domestic airlines not to be part of the European Unions Emission Trading Scheme (ETS),a decision that the inter-governmental body imposed on airlines entering European airspace.

We have asked airlines not to be part of ETS and any correspondence on this will be routed through the civil aviation ministry, an official with the direct knowledge of the matter told The Indian Express.

New EU emission rules,effective from January 1,2012,stipulate all flights in and out of Europe to pay for their emissions. The airline will be sent their 2012 bills in 2013 after EU assesses the emissions. Apart from India,23 nations including China,the US,Russia have opposed the scheme and threatened reciprocal measures on European airlines. China has barred its airlines from participating in the scheme. As a retaliatory measure,it has suspended the purchase order worth $14 billion from the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. There are some steps which have already been taken,and some which will be decided soon if EU does not take back it unilateral decision, the official said.
