The Government on Friday decided to do away with the existing two-tier structure and have only one Central Committee to function at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in case of an emergency situation. Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar on Friday held a meeting to review various aspects of Civil Aviation security in the aftermath of the February 1 incident this year at the IGIA,when unruly behaviour by a passenger,Jitender Mohla, prompted the pilot of a Goa-Delhi Indigo flight to seek priority landing permission. The incident led to a three-hour long hijack drama on the runway. At the meeting, attended by top officials of Home and Civil Aviation Ministry and other security agencies,it was decided that only one Central Committee would handle emergencies at the Delhi airport, instead of the existing two-tier system to reduce overlap during such situations. They also decided that all concerned agencies will follow standard operating procedures, including certain additional measures,to face any eventuality. Steps have also been taken to streamline the flow of information and decision-making during an emergency situation and infrastructure prescribed to meet such situations put in operational readiness for all times,an official statement said.
