Govt green light for 7 new BRT corridors in the city

Consultants will get six months to prepare detailed project reports: PWD minister

The Delhi government on Tuesday gave the green light to the Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out a feasibility study for construction of seven bus rapid transit corridors in the city.

PWD officials said they have initiated the process of hiring consultants to carry out the study for preliminary alignment of these stretches and hope to award the works soon.

PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said: "In-principle approval for carrying out a feasibility study was given by the Chief Minister on Tuesday. The process of hiring consultants will be taken up again. The consultants will be given six months to prepare detailed project reports.''

The total length of the seven corridors will be 105 km.

Senior PWD officials said they had already shortlisted consultants for the feasibility study but the process was put on hold earlier this year since the Delhi High Court was hearing a case related to the Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand BRT corridor.

"Some of the consultants had backed out. But we will go back to them and try to convince them to work on the reports. The consultants who are on board will be awarded the work soon. They will be given six months to prepare detailed project reports, based on which tender documents will be prepared for awarding work to start construction of the corridors,'' an official said.

The study is estimated to cost Rs 2 crore per corridor.

The seven corridors include Mukundpur to Palam More (Outer Ring Road to NH-8), which is 29 km and is the longest stretch under the PWD.

The other corridors are ISBT Kashmere Gate to Shahi Idgah, Mundka Tikri border (Old Rohtak Road-NH-10); Sarai Kale Khan to Jor Bagh (via Barapullah nullah); National Stadium to Ghazipur; Narela to Azadpur; ISBT Anand Vihar to Connaught Place (from Road No. 57 via Vikas Marg and DDU Marg); and, Kirby Place to Tilak Nagar.
