Govt lists Singur farmers who want land back

Pulak Sarkar,BDO of Singur,said the process of publication of names claiming land is usual process. “Till Saturday,1,728 persons have applied with the government and their names have been published. The next step will be verification of their claims,” Sarkar said.

The Land and Land Reforms Department,meanwhile,is also mapping the land mouza-wise. So far,survey of two mouzas,Beraberi and Gopalnagar,has already been completed.

There is clear instruction from Writer’s Buildings that the survey of the remaining three mouzas of Singur — Bajemelia,Singherbheri and Khaserbheri — should be completed at the earliest.

Though Tata Motors and the State are battling it out in court,the administration is keen to complete all formalities so that the land can be handed over to farmers without any delay if there is a ruling in the government’s favour. “All official work for returning land to farmers is going on,” said Becharam Manna,Trinamool Congress MLA from Haripal and leader of the Singur Krishi Jamin Raksha Committee.

On June 26,the state government started the process of formal handover of land to unwilling farmers after the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill 2011 was passed in the state Assembly.

Tata Motors then moved the Calcutta High Court,challenging the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act,2011.

The Supreme Court on June 29 restrained the West Bengal government from distributing land it has taken back from Tata Motors to farmers “until further orders by (Calcutta) High Court”.
