Govt looks to make ‘benami’ transactions ban more effective

Those who have bought properties under 'benami' system may face a crackdown.

Government is in the process of consolidating and amending a law which seeks to prohibit ‘benami’ transactions,Law Minister M Veerappa Moily informed the Lok Sabha today.

“The government is in the process of consolidating and amending the Benami Transaction (Prohibition) Act,1988,” Moily told the House in a written reply to a question.

To a question whether the Central Vigilance Commission has recommended a stringent law for the seizure of benami properties,the minister replied in the negative.

“This Ministry has not received any recommendation of the Central Vigilance Commission on benami transactions,” he said.
