To complement the existing network of public transport in the Capital, the Delhi government is looking at the possibility of introducing pod cars in select areas of the city.

The personal rapid transit system, which will run on elevated tracks, will provide connectivity between local area and public transport options.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday held a meeting with senior officials of the Transport department and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) to discuss the project.

“We are keen to take it up as a pilot project in areas such as ITPO,Dwarka sub-city,Karol Bagh,East Delhi,North Campus, etc,as it will definitely supplement the existing modes of public transport and will be an alternative to personal vehicles,” Dikshit said in a statement.

The company that expressed interest in executing the project has offered to commission the project with their own resources.

The average fare for the commuters will be around Rs 6 per km,officials said. The pod, with a capacity of seven passengers, will be a battery-operated vehicle. The government has asked the DIMTS and the Transport department to get a detailed project report (DPR) prepared from the company, which made a presentation on the new system during the meeting.

According to sources,a similar project was earlier explored by the Delhi government for an internal link in Vasant Kunj. A DPR was also prepared for this around a year ago. There has no movement on the project since then.
