The government wants to hardsell Delhi as a destination for shooting movies, and has put into process a plan to draw filmmakers by making it easier for them get the permission required.
The aim is to simplify the existing procedure, which involves getting shooting clearances from several agencies, and then to peg the city as an alternative to Mumbai, said G G Saxena,Managing Director of the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC). Mumbai has become a common sight in Indian movies. Delhi is a refreshing alternative because of its visually appealing urban landscape, impressive vistas and rich heritage, Saxena said.
Chief Secretary PK Tripathi has written to all the agencies, whose clearance is usually required for film projects. He has also sought their views on a DTTDC proposal for providing single-window clearance to filmmakers.
Saxena said the DTTDC has proposed that it could be appointed as the nodal agency, which will coordinate and arrange shooting clearances for filmmakers,so they dont have to run from pillar to post for the purpose. A production unit has to take approvals from way too many agencies even for a short shooting schedule. We feel this is the main reason why filmmakers are staying away from Delhi, Saxena said.
The DTTDC has proposed that a system be enforced, wherein a filmmaker has to just apply for permission, and its officials will coordinate with all other agencies to procure or reject the request in the shortest time possible.
The letter for seeking suggestions has been sent to,among others, the New Delhi Municipal Council, which manages Lutyens Delhi, the Archaeological Survey of India, the Delhi Police and the Culture department.
Saxena said that the efforts to lure filmmakers will eventually benefit Delhi,as it would promote Delhi as a tourist hub not just in India but also in the global arena. Look at what Zindigi Na Milegi Dobara has done to Spain, where it was shot. Movies are an effective platform to showcase Delhi, especially now, when we are also applying to become a World Heritage City, Saxena said.
The DTTDC has suggested that all the agencies must be sensitised to the need for granting permission quickly.
