Govt orders crackdown on illegal lotteries

The director,Punjab State Lotteries Department,Chandigarh has asked the police department to take action against illegal lotteries in the state.

The director,Punjab State Lotteries Department,Chandigarh has asked the police department to take action against illegal lotteries in the state. Recently,a meeting of the directorate was held under the leadership of Finance Minister Dr Upinderjit Kaur about the illegal lottery business. The minister took serious note of the problem as it has been affecting the legal lottery business of the state.

Following this,CS Talwar,Director,Punjab State Lotteries,Chandigarh wrote a letter to the commissioners of police of Jalandhar,Ludhiana and Amritsar stating,“The illegal lottery business has been badly affecting the legalised business of lotteries and is thus encouraging the business working in illegal way. You are requested to act against these practices in your respective districts.”

The director further said,“The police department is also required to help some raid teams constituted at the head office, who will also keep raiding the illegal sale of lotteries from time to time.” About five months ago,the directorate had issued instructions to all the nodal officers of the district to conduct raids against illegal lotteries, but nothing substantial took place.

AK Sharma,District Nodal Officer,Ludhiana said,“A few months ago we had a meeting with the Excise and Taxation department, but did not conduct any raids etc. I am yet to receive the recent circular moved by the directorate,so will act accordingly.”

According to sources, bigwigs of some political parties are also running the illegal lottery business,so concerned officers shy away from conducting raids as their effort proves futile when someone in power orders them not to take action. However,Talwar said,“Nothing of this sort is in my knowledge. Earlier,I issued instructions at my own level. But this time,I got these issued through the Principal Secretary Home to the concerned departments and hope to get good results.”
