Govt prepares two ‘poorest districts’ lists

With the Supreme Court directing the government to allocate additional five million tonnes of foodgrain to 150 poorest districts across the country.

With the Supreme Court directing the government to allocate additional five million tonnes of foodgrain to 150 poorest districts across the country, the Planning Commission has given two different lists of such districts to a committee appointed by the apex court.

Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia was learnt to have sent two separate lists to Justice D P Wadhwa Committee last month.

While one list had the 150 districts covered under the National Food For Work programme, the other had 147 districts under the Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held discussions with Ahluwalia and Food Minister K V Thomas on the SC order last week.

“We are in constant touch with the Justice D P Wadhwa Committee for rolling out the scheme. The Food Ministry has earmarked 5 million tonnes of foodgrains,” said Food Secretary B C Gupta.
