A Day after residents of the Doaba region and Rajasthan blocked the discharge of industrial waste into the Kala Sanghia drain, the district administration made it clear to industrialists that polluting units would not be tolerated. However, industrialists criticised the deputy commissioners order about formation of three inspection committees to carry out surprise checks.
Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti today told representatives of industry at a meeting that industrial waste would not be released into the drain. He told them that three special committees comprising an SDM,an SP and a PPCB engineer each with two representatives of activist Baba Seechewal would be formed.
Industrialists later called a press conference and alleged that they were facing harassment at the hands of corrupt officials of Punjab Pollution Control Board and the inspection committees would hinder their working.
The Municipal Corporation, too, swung into action on Thursday. Engineers led by Superintending Engineer AS Dhaliwal visited a temporary treatment plant of 2 MLD capacity in Dasuya (Hoshiarpur district) built by people under the leadership of Baba Seechewal. MC authorities plan to build a similar plant here.
