A day after three engineering students of Kalyani Government Engineering College drowned while taking bath in the sea at Puri, the state government has sent a team to Orissa to probe the deaths.
On October 29, around 100 students from the college’s Rishi Bankim Hostel had left for Puri without informing the college authorities.
On Saturday, two students — Sayan Barui (21), a second-year student from Katwa and Ranajit Singh, a third-year student from Kharagpur — drowned.
Three others were rescued. The body of another student, Arindam Halder (23), a second-year engineering student who went missing, was recovered on Sunday morning.
The three-member team will arrange for the return of the students and hand over the bodies of the deceased to their parents.
The team will inquire why so many students left the college without informing the authorities and why they were not stopped.
Reportedly, students had burst crackers late in the night but neither the college authorities nor the hostel superintendent tried to stop them.
“The students had gone on the trip on their own. They had arranged for vehicles and accommodation on their own,” said Krishnendu Bhattacharjee, principal of the college.
A teacher, however, said: “How can the college authorities allow so many students to go on a trip together without a teacher? That also when the college has just opened after a long Puja vacation.”
