As part of its drive against the use of plastic bags,the Delhi government has issued showcause notices to eight plastic manufacturing units in the Capital for producing poly bags that exceed the prescribed thickness and size.

As part of its drive against the use of plastic bags,the Delhi government has issued showcause notices to eight plastic manufacturing units in the Capital for producing poly bags that exceed the prescribed thickness and size.

We had inspected 48 plastic bag-making units and taken samples for analysis of thickness and size. It was found that eight units were manufacturing plastic bags more than the thickness and size prescribed by the law, an official from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) said.

The defaulters might face closure,the official added.

As per government norms,the thickness of recycled bags and virgin plastic bags should not be less than 20 microns.

Action has been initiated against the defaulting units under the Water Act/Air Act as well as the Delhi Degradable Plastic Bag (Manufacture,Sale and Usage) and Garbage (Control) Act,2000,the official said.

As per the Act,recycled bags should be coloured and pigmented and dyes used to produce plastic bags should to be in accordance with the pigments listed in Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The government has also prosecuted more than 30 retail outlets in the city for selling goods in plastic bags.
