Shashi Tharoor emphasised that ultimately law and order in Australia was the responsibility of its Govt.

The government has taken a serious view of the safety of its citizens in Australia and even a single person being hurt was of "great concern" to it, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said on Tuesday.

"It is their responsibility, but we have left them in no doubt about the seriousness with which we view the safety of our citizens in their country', he told reporters here.

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has met the Australian Prime Minister and all relevant cabinet members there and discussed safety of the Indian students, he said.

"I think apparently it is in Australia's own interest that students should be safe, as education is the major industry in that country, contributing 15 billion Australian Dollars to their economy", he added.

"If the widespread perception in India is that students are not safe there, they will not be able to say with pride that Australia has 90,000 Indian students there currently, which is slightly larger than the number of Indian students in US," Tharoor said.

The minister however, emphasised that ultimately law and order in Australia was the responsibility of its government.

"I don't think we can sit here and tell the Australians what to do", he said, when asked about the increasing number of attacks on Indian students.

Two students from Punjab and Madhya Pradesh were the latest victims of attacks on Indians in Australia when they were assaulted by a group of men in separate incidents.

Australia is not particularly violent or racistBy: Flavian Hardcastle | 16-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Don't believe me? Look at the assaults per capita stats at nationmaster, and check their reliability at the Australian Institute of Criminology web site. You will find that Australia's monthly assault rate works out to about 60 per 100, 000. A population of 90, 000 Indian students should therefore experience about 55-56 assaults per month. In other worlds: the 26 or so assaults reported in the media since late May, amount to an absolutely negligible number of assaults. And before you conclude that Australia must be a particularly violent place, note also that the assault rate in Aus is slightly lower than pretty much all the English speaking nations. I think, from my web research, that problems of bigotry and prejudice are far worse in India. And as an Australian, I personally think you Indians are projecting your own inadequacies onto us. You lot are the racists.
Australia is not particularly violent or racist? By: Dr. Paras Deo | 24-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward You only have done some so called 'web research' i have had more than some 'racial experience' in OZ and i can asuure you that you have no idea what you are yapping about. I live in Europe since 1979 and have travelled to alomost all so called first world country but have face racial abuse only in your country. Your views are purely subjective and hopful thinking. If you call Indian as 'a racist lot' then U Aussies are the same but mentally more primitive. evry second sentence that an ZO speaks has a F world. Is that your culture or your mentality or are just plain dumb?
Here is why INDIANS deserve to be beaten and disrespectedBy: rohinton | 12-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward We are proud because the white man gives praise and awards t a movie like SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. How can any nation have any respect for an India, which allows movies that show the entire nation as slumdogs. These beatings will stop if India ever grows cojones and bans the production of movies like SLUMDOG.
Do not divert, Rohinton, bad for allBy: Shank Vagal | 14-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Know what? U r looking London and talking Tokyo! The earlier you remove that mental squint, better for you and the others. This comment stings like poison ivy. Why should a movie bring on such attacks, in Zoroaster's name? The overall image of India isn't a top secret as it is; poverty, slums, early morning squatters by railway lines, poorest infrastructure, bloody stupid (?) leaders are known to the world, no big deal about that as a secret though it is quite pathetic at the same time. In spite of all these obstacles/drawbacks, I can proudly say, our transport system, communicativity (telephones, postal service etc) etc are far better than most places (even so called developed ones) in the world given all the adversities under which they are forced to operate. What we have to do is to immediately ensure bonafide of the "students" visiting foreign countries. The bogus operatives(making money)as well as the so called "students" (seeking anything but education) need to be punished.
Our ProblemsBy: SVS Subrahmaniam | 12-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward The root cause for these attacks starts from the jealousy and insecurity in the student community there, because of intelligence, hard work and progress of our Indian students at the studies in Australian institutes. How ever they assure our government in their country and what ever it may be, it is impossible now to stop it. How ever great we talk of ourselves, in my opinion the “oneness” as Indian is lacking and appearing to the out side world. This is the root cause for all problems against us in all spheres whether in racial killings, in our foreign policies etc. 26/11 happen we start criticize each other while the operation is going on, if any incident happens we criticize each other, the reason for this is, we are the greatest democratic nation we hare very free to utter any thing like any where. Day by day, the national cohesiveness is eroding politically socially and regionally. We are not learning any thing from the happenings against us globally. Is it not weakening us?
LADIES SPECIALBy: XYZ | 12-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward LIKE RAILWAYS INDIAN AIRLINES CAN INTRODUCE SOME LADIES SPECIAL.IF THERE IS ANY CRITICISM OF THE AIRLINES THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE CAN SAY WE HAVE INTRODUCED MANY LADIES SPECIAL .LAKHS OF RUPEES ARE SPENT ON CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE, BEAUTIFICATION, FURNISHING OF MANY LADIES REST ROOMS IN VARIOUS PLACES ---SO WHY NOT HAVE SOME DESIGNATED LADIES SPECIAL FLIGHTS? AIRLINES CAN CREATE A WORLD RECORD BY INTRODUCING LADIES SPECIAL--AIRLINES CAN GO INTO THE GUINESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORD
Protect Indians at home firstBy: Suraj Gopal | 12-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Protection of Indians starts at home..i.e protecting Indians from other Indians...A good start would be protecting Indians in states like Gujarat, Orissa and Karnataka where Indians were murdered by other Indians because of their religion
U r not thinking about other IndiansBy: Prithvi | 31-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Indians are and were not protected from other Indians as below:- In J
