Govt taking two-fold approach to redevelop MHADA colonies: CM

The state government will adopt a two-fold approach towards redevelopment of old MHADA colonies to ensure that developers do not get undue benefit through additional FSI or collection of premium.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday informed the Assembly that the government was thinking of permitting MHADA to redevelop 56-odd colonies, largely in Mumbai, on its own through contractors. In case MHADA was unable to develop the colonies on its own, the developer would be granted additional FSI on the basis of the additional area expected to be created through redevelopment.

This will generate larger homes for those currently living in MHADA flats, Chavan said. "The decision to grant premium was stayed in 2010 and will no longer be used in these redevelopment schemes. Earlier, developers largely chose to pay the premium and affordable houses could not be created in Mumbai," said Chavan.

Shiv Sena has led an agitation seeking permission for redevelopment of 56 MHADA colonies, some of which are over 20 years old and dilapidated.
