Govt tax refunds jump 26 pc to Rs 11,000 cr

  • The government returned roughly Rs 11,000 crore in the first two months of the current fiscal in the form of tax refunds, which grew by 26.19 per cent in the period compared to 2008-09. The amount refunded to tax payers stood at Rs 11,375 crore against Rs 9,014 crore in the corresponding period last fiscal. According to the central board of direct taxes, refunds to non-corporate taxpayers grew 61.7 percent to Rs 2,149 crore against Rs 1,329 crore in 2008-09, spurred by faster processing of returns on the new national computer network.

    Total direct tax collections during first two months of 2009-10 stood at Rs 24,158 crore, up from Rs 22,840 crore in the corresponding period last year, registering a minimal growth of 5.77 per cent. Growth in corporate tax collections was recorded at 5.56 per cent. The amount garnered by the government in April and May was Rs 8,578 crore under this head against Rs 8,126 crore in the same period last year. Personal Income Tax including FBT, STT and BCT grew at 5.92 per cent in the first two months of the current fiscal at Rs15,559 crore compared to Rs 14,690 crore in the same period of 2008-09.
