After launching the doorstep-delivery system for supply of foodgrains to BPL families in Sonbhadra,Mirzapur and Chandauli districts, the Food and Civil Supplies department is now planning to extend the scheme to Jhansi,Banda,Lalitpur,Mahoba and Sitapur districts in Bundelkhand region.
District offices have been instructed to prepare a list of all such villages where people do not have an easy access to PDS shops. The department is aiming to extend the scheme across the state and is working towards checking the cost logistics of the project.
Launched in November last year, the doorstep-delivery scheme primarily targets at ensuring timely delivery of foodgrains in those areas where transportation is a problem. Under this scheme, the government takes the responsibility of ferrying ration from block-level godowns to the shops. Joint Commissioner,Food and Civil Supplies,VK Rai said,Black marketing of PDS grains, especially those meant for the BPL families,is one of the biggest problems in successful implementation of the public distribution system. We have seen cases where grains, after being released from block godowns, never reach the shops and are sold at higher prices in open market.
Rai said after the success of the scheme in Sonbhadra,Mirzapur and Chandauli,it will be implemented in the Bundelkhand region in May.
