Govt wants common entrance test for LLB

As a part of its ongoing efforts to bring legal education in India in tune with changing global trends,the Union government plans to introduce a common entrance examination for admission to law schools in the country. Also on the wish-list of the Union Ministry of Law and Justice is a scheme to classify each of the existing 913 law schools,including those in the private sector,as per set standards.

Giving this information here on Wednesday,Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily said the proposals will be deliberated upon at the ensuing two-day national consultation on Second Generation Reform in Legal Education. The consultation,to be held on May 1-2,will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He said the experts participating in the consultation will also finalise a blueprint for redesigning the legal education system in the country.

“The national consultation will try to identify the major challenges legal education is facing today. We will draw a roadmap to bring radical institutional reforms in legal education to meet the requirements of the Bar and also of trade,commerce and industry as the legal profession today has international dimensions,” Moily said.
