The government warned that it would take action against hoarders and profiteers, as part of measures to keep prices of essential commodities under check.

State governments have also been requested to strengthen the PDS, besides initiating action against hoarders, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters in Kolkata.

Import of commodities and subsidised sale of other staple items were among other measures the government was taking to bring prices down, he said.

India imports pulses from Canada and other countries and edible oils from Malaysia and Indonesia to bridge the shortfall back home.

In Delhi, Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas said the country would import pulses to tide over a deficit of about four million tonnes this year, but it has enough rice and wheat stocks to meet domestic demand.

Rice prices rose after poor monsoon hit sowing, while sugar prices surged owing to a fall in output.

Mukherjee said commodities like rice, wheat, edible oil, sugar and kerosene would be provided at subsidised rates to people living below the poverty line.

HORADERSBy: NIRANJAN | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward IF VERY STIFF AND STRINGENT PENALTIES, FINES AND SENTENCES ARE NOT HANDED OUT QUICKLY TO HOARDERS AND ADULTERERS, THE JUSTICE SYSTEM IS FAILING IN ITS DUTY. THESE PEOPLE, HOARDERS AND ADULTERERS, ARE MUCH WORSE THAN MASS MURDERERS AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. ALSO, ALL THE PROPERTY OF THE FAMILY OF HOARDERS AND ADULTERERS SHOULD BE CONFISCATED. DOES OUR JUDICIARY HAVE THE TEETH TO DO SO?
Rising prices of essential commoditiesBy: Gopal | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The concern of the Govt in the matter of rising prices of essential commodities appears to be rather shallow. Trading in essential commodities in the commodity exchanges should be banned, especiall trading in food items. Import of pulses, oil etc is not a solution to the problem. Pulses going out of common man's reach suddenly is because of futures trading in these items. The hoarders have already made millions by now. Will the Govt publish the major players in the commodities market ? Will it ban trading in essential items of mass consumption ?
