The state government on Wednesday warned Lalgarhs Police Virodhi Santrash Committee of police action if incident of abduction of political workers takes place again.
Early Tuesday morning a group of armed miscreants abducted nine CPM members from Sarenga village of Bankura and took them to Lalgarh.
Later, when a contingent of police led by the DM and the SP of West Midnapore approached Lalgarh, they were stopped by armed people, mostly women. The police had to beat a hasty retreat and after day-long negotiations the hostages were released.
The abduction is a serious matter and totally unacceptable to us. We warn those, particularly Chattradhar Mahato and his associates, who perpetrated this offence that if they do it again, the police will take strong action against them, Raj Kanojia,IG (Law and Order),said on Wednesday.
The committee shot back. We did not abduct anyone. If we had abducted them we would not have let them go. Its a false allegation leveled by the government. But if they want to take action, they are welcome to do so. You may kill Chhatradhar Mahato but the agitation will go on, Mahato said. He reiterated that under no circumstances the committee would allow the police to enter Lalgarh.
Santhals have been victims of police atrocities for long. But this cannot go on. Elections or no elections,we will not allow the police to enter Lalgarh. And if they do it forcibly, prepare for a fallout that will be far bloodier than Nandigram, said the tribal leader.
