Govt won’t rush ahead with 14 proposed BRTs, says Sheila

Internal roads need to be strengthened so they can handle traffic volumes: CM

With work yet to begin on the 14 proposed Bus Rapid Transit corridors, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday said her government was planning to go slow on the BRT projects as the existing BRT — from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand — drew flak from all quarters.

She said the internal roads of colonies, through which the BRTs are to pass, will be improved before implementation of the new projects.

"I have decided to go slow on the proposed BRT corridors. After the initial negative reaction towards the BRT, we want to be cautious before committing ourselves. We want the new BRTs to be well-planned and implement them in an organised manner. Also, before starting construction, we want to ensure that interior roads around the corridors are improved to handle the traffic burden,'' Dikshit said.

Following a court case and controversy related to the Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand BRT corridor, the construction of the 14 corridors was put on hold.

In October last year, the Delhi Cabinet had given an in-principle approval for construction of seven BRT corridors.

Some of the proposed BRTs are to come up in East Delhi while the others have been planned for West and North Delhi.

Seven of these corridors will come under the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), while another seven are to be constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD).

The government had recently given an in-principle approval for carrying out feasibility study for seven BRT corridors that are to be constructed by PWD.

Besides this, the BRT corridor from Karawal Nagar to Gandhi Nagar and Yamuna Vihar to Mori Gate — to be constructed by DIMTS — has also been given the green signal.
