GTU to hold exhibition for Std XII students

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is organising a two-day academic exhibition on January 26 and 27, inviting all its affiliated colleges to set up stalls at its new campus in Chandkheda for the benefit of Std XII students.

The exhibition is being organised to provide a detailed background of the colleges to the parents of the Std XII students who are interested in admission of their wards in technical and professional courses after completion of their senior secondary classes.

Though the admission in state's engineering and other professional colleges is done on merit basis through a state-level admission test, new colleges being added every year resulting into the increase of seats has given students an option to choose the colleges.

Since the number of seats, particularly in self-financed engineering colleges, are more than the number of admission seekers, this provides an opportunity to students looking for a college of their own choice under the management quota, ignoring the one allotted by the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC). ACPC is the government agency for admission to professional courses in the state.

The GTU officials said that merit had remained a criteria for admission only in 16 government-run engineering colleges where the annual tuition fee was merely Rs 1,500, compared to the high-fee structure ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 1 lakh plus in self-financed institutes. In these institutes, students with minimum eligibility qualification are able to get admission against seats under management quota, thus merit losing its significance.

The total of seats in state's engineering colleges is 50,423 and more than 6,000 seats remained unfilled after admission this year.

GTU registrar Gitesh Joshi said 495 colleges, including 95 degree engineering colleges, affiliated to the university had been asked to set up the stalls at the exhibition, with literature and information bulletins about their institutes. "It will help the parents to select the colleges for their wards," he said. Joshi said most of the colleges would be participating in the exhibition.
