Gujarat govt to extend term of Nanavati Commission

Gujarat government has decided to extend the term of Nanavati Commission probing the 2002 riot cases,a home department official said .

Gujarat government has decided to extend the term of Nanavati Commission probing the 2002 riot cases,a home department official said today.

The present term of the Nanavati Commission comprising retd Justices G T Nanavati and Akshay Mehta,ends on December 31.

This is the 12th extension for the Commission. The term of the commission now has been extended upto June 30,2010.

This extension is likely to be the Commission’s last,as it is in the process of finalising the report on the post-Godhra riots,the home department official said.

Nanavati Commission,last year submitted the first part of its report dealing with the Godhra train burning issue,in which it had concluded that incident was a ‘pre-planned conspiracy and not an accident’ and gave clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his ministers.

The commission to inquire the post-Godhra riots was appointed in on March 6,2002,comprising retd Justice K G Shah of the Gujarat High Court. Later in May 2002,Justice G T Nanavati was appointed to the commission.

After the death of Justice Shah in 2008,Justice Mehta was appointed to the commission.
