Nearly four years after VP Dhingra was caught by the CBI while accepting bribe of Rs 20,000 outside his residence in Sector 19,the court of Special CBI Judge Darshan Singh convicted the former superintendent engineer of UT’s Electricity department in a graft case on Friday.

Dhingra was caught by CBI on August 2,2006,after a contractor complained that the SE demanded Rs 20,000 to approve equipment of his company. He was booked under Sections 7 and 13 (2) read with 13 (1) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.

According to the complaint filed by Subhash Bajaj, managing director of the Kanta Electricals India Limited,Mohali,Dhingra had asked him to come with the money to his residence in Sector 19. Bajaj alleged the SE had demanded the money to facilitate approval of the contract, even though a government laboratory had approved the equipment of his company.

He had reportedly told the CBI officials that on August 1,Dhingra asked him for monetary favours to sort out the matter. He further told the CBI that the money was asked to be paid at the SE’s residence the next day. Acting on the complaint, the CBI then laid a trap to nab Dhingra. The official was reportedly caught red-handed on August 2,2006. The CBI also carried a raid at his residence after he was nabbed. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced tomorrow.
