Former director general of police R B Sreekumar has submitted a CD of a recorded conversation to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), claiming that an IAS official had threatened him not to depose against the state before the Nanavati-Shah commission probing the Godhra train carnage and post-Godhra riots.
Sreekumar submitted the evidence in connection with a probe on the alleged involvement of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and some of his former cabinet colleagues, besides senior IAS and police officials, in the 2002 riots. The probe was ordered on a complaint filed by slain ex-Congress MP Ehsan Jafri’s widow Zakia.
The former cop, who is among half a dozen people including senior IPS official Rahul Sharma, quizzed by SIT so far, has identified the IAS official as G C Murmu.
In his deposition, he claimed to the SIT that he was summoned by Murmu in his capacity as Secretary (Home) at GNFC Guest House at Paldi on August 25, 2004, and threatened he would lose his promotion if he deposed against the state government.
Sreekumar claimed to have clandestinely tape-recorded the conversation with Murmu.
Sreekumar told this newspaper on Tuesday that he was subsequently superseded by three of his juniors. However, he was ordered promoted after he filed a petition before a tribunal, though by that time he had already retired.
According to SIT sources, IPS official and IG, SRP (Rajkot), Rahul Sharma was also questioned in this connection.
