Riots: Guv forwards Sreekumar’s letter seeking action

A letter written to Governor by retired DGP R B Sreekumar seeking action against certain officers for "culpable negligence" during the 2002 riots has been forwarded by the Raj Bhawan to the state's Home Department for appropriate action.

The under secretary to the Governor, M S Shekhawat, forwarded the letter to the Home Department seeking "a report on the action taken or proposed to be taken by the government on the issues involved in the representation".

Sreekumar has written to Governor Kamla Beniwal on December 9, 2012, asking her to order the state government to begin departmental inquires against IAS and IPS officers who allegedly showed negligence and facilitated the post-Godhra riots.

Principal Secretary (Home) S K Nanda said, "We will first read the letter of the officer and see what suitable action has to be taken."

Among the officer against whom Sreekumar has sought action are the then chief secretary Swaran Kant Verma, the then DGP Chakravarti and the then additional chief secretary Ashok Narayan.

Gang war breaks out in city

Ahmedabad: Members of rival gangs clashed with each other in Shaherkotda area of the city on Sunday night over an old dispute, police said. The clash broke out after one Dharmendrasinh Barad was attacked with swords allegedly by the rival gang at an eatery. Police inspector V K Delvadiya said, "All the accused identified would be rounded up. They are old rivals and have fought several times in the past over petty issues." A case of rioting and assault under various sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.

Rs 12.66 lakh stolen from Surat mall

Surat: Unidentified persons broke open the Dhiraj Sons shopping mall at Puna Kumbharia road here Sunday night and decamped with Rs 12.66 lakh cash. According to the complaint lodged by the mall owner, the money was last week's collection kept in the office cash counter. Police suspect it to be an insider's job.
