Ahmadabad, Novmeber 21: Ugandan businessmen to respond by investing in Gujarat, while Kenya keen to adopt state’s PPP model

The Gujarati business community is set to have a significant investment in the east African countries.

On anvil is a 100-km-long pipeline in north Kenya to be set up by Reliance Industries, a port in that country by the Adani group, courtesy a joint venture with the Kenyan government.

Also, a food processing and textile mill will be established by the Ashima Group in Uganda.

All this was shared by the business delegation led by Chief Minister Narendra Modi that visited the east African countries of Kenya and Uganda between November 17 and 20.

The delegation met Ugandan President Yoweri Musheveni and held a series of meetings with the Prime Minister and his council of ministers in the government.

Gujarat Chief Secretary D Rajagopalan, said: “Various issues of mutual interest in agriculture, agro-processing, power and infrastructure development were discussed. It will be carried forward in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit in January 2009.”

In response, the Ugandan business community will expand its investments in Gujarat, starting with a wheat-processing unit for manufacturing biscuits in Ahmedabad, he said.

Cotton production, gems and jewellery are also of interest to them, he added.

The delegation further said that the Kenyan Government has expressed its willingness to adopt the Public Private Partnership (PPP) approach of the Gujarat government by modifying its policy guidelines.

The road-show in both countries, enlisting the developmental activities in Gujarat, organised by the state government in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), was also much appreciated, according to the members of the delegation.
