Gurgaon: 10 held after clashes, police scan CCTV footage

A day after contract workers went on the rampage and set fire to more than a dozen vehicles at Orient Craft building in Sector-37, Gurgaon, 10 persons were arrested on Tuesday.

Contractor Harender alias Lovely who allegedly assaulted one of the workers, sparking Monday's protest, was among those arrested. He was later released on bail, while nine workers are in judicial custody.

After reviewing the situation, Haryana Labour and Employment Minister Shiv Charan Lal Sharma has ordered an inquiry into the incident. Joint Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Ravi Yadav will inquire and submit a report within three days, an official said.

District administration on Tuesday stationed a team of police near the Orient Craft building as a precautionary measure.

Police are also trying to identify more workers who were involved in stone-pelting and arson, through the CCTV footage provided by the export house.

"We have got the CCTV footage from the company. We are trying to identify the others and they will be arrested soon," said Hamid Akhtar, DCP (South).

Five workers were taken into custody late on Monday night and FIRs were lodged after receiving complaints from the company and the employees.

An FIR against Harender, a resident of Sector-10, was registered on the statement of worker Rajesh, who was allegedly stabbed by the contractor. Rajesh, too, was arrested for his involvement.

Around 2,000 workers of the company set ablaze 12 two-wheelers and three cars, including one of ACP (Traffic) Ravinder Tomar. Two cars parked inside the company premises was also damaged.

Labour Minister Sharma said the number of workers deployed through contractor should be less than the labourers on roll of the company. He also asked owners to provide similar facilities to the contract workers as that of permanent staff. Sharma also held a meeting with the Chairman and Managing Director of Orient Craft.
