The Haryana State Pollution Control Board has issued a show cause notice to a private company for causing pollution and contaminating an aquifer with toxic discharges in Sarhaul village in the district.
Munjal Showa Ltd has been issued the notice under Section-33A of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act-1974 and has been asked to submit a report within 15 days,failing which it will be closed without further notice.
The unit,which is engaged in electro-plating processes and manufactures shock absorbers for two and three-wheelers,has been discharging hexavalent chromium,which is highly toxic in nature,into the aquifer.
The unit has also been directed to deposit an FDR of Rs 2 crore or a bank guarantee of Rs 5 crore with validity up to March 31,2012 in favour of HSPCB.
The villagers of Sarhaul had complained to the pollution control board,alleging that the company was discharging untreated effluent through bore holes,making underground water unfit for consumption.
