PGI cheating case: Gurivi demanded Rs 35 lakh each from aspirants

To help them cheat in PGI's MD/MS examination, alleged kingpin Gurivi Reddy, as per CBI sources, had quoted a price of Rs 35 lakh each to the 10 aspirants who were to be provided with answers on the exam day. While the CBI is now sure that there were only 10 "real beneficiaries", it is still unclear about their identities even as it continues to interrogate 10 people summoned from Andhra Pradesh.

One of the CBI officials said that each candidate who was to benefit from the question papers leaked by the dummy candidates had paid Gurivi Reddy Rs 35 lakh in instalments. However, the "real" candidates had not received answers by the time the CBI nabbed the dummy candidates and the rest of the gang from different hotels in Chandigarh.

The CBI officials had summoned 10 people whose names were provided by Gurivi Reddy and Dr Ganga Dhar Reddy. Initially, out of the 10 summoned, seven showed up on November 19 at the CBI office. The remaining three came in the past two days, said a source in the CBI.

Asked about formal arrest of any of these candidates, the CBI source said, "Since these alleged beneficiaries had not received answers by the time the CBI arrested the dummy candidates from the centres, we cannot say whether they will be arrested or not. As for now, these candidates are still detained and are being questioned in the presence of Gurivi Reddy and Dr Ganga Dhar Reddy."

In another development, the CBI has recovered some cheques from Gurivi Reddy. Though CBI sources say that these cheques were duly signed by the account holders, it is still not clear as to why an aspirant wanting Reddy's help to cheat would pay through a cheque. In some of the cheques, the amount was also mentioned while some were blank. CBI sleuths say that a team has been sent to Hyderabad to find out the account holders.
