Gurjars threaten to launch agitation for ST status

    The Mahapanchayat asked the Central government to ensure speedy clearance of the SC/ST Bill.

    Gurjar leaders on Wednesday threatened to launch an agitation in support of their demand for inclusion of the community in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

    At the day-long Mahpanchayat near here, prominent Gurjar leader Kirorisingh Bainsla, announced setting up of an eleven-member committee to chalk-out the action plan to achieve the demand.

    The Mahapanchayat asked the Central government to ensure speedy clearance of the SC/ST Bill, pending with state Governor, which promises them a better deal by earmarking 5 per cent quota in government jobs.

    Over 70 people were killed in violent Gurjar agitations in 2007 and 2008 in parts of Rajasthan and Haryana which even spilled over to the national capital territory, which has sizable presence of the community to its periphery Speking on the occasion, Bainsla, who lost the Lok Sabha elections, warned the Congress government that if their demand was not met All Rajasthan Gurjar Sangarsh Samiti would launch an agitation in near future.

    Fix the problemBy: S.V.Ramanan | 11-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Instead of addressing grievances on an ad hoc basis, Govt. must find lasting solutions and not politically expedient ones.This problem keeps on cropping up like Tranportes's strike.
