Gurjjars in Rajasthan lifted their indefinite ‘Mahapadav’ (sit-in) following the Governor S K Singh's assent to the much-awaited bill granting five per cent quota to the community.

The Gurjjars, led by Kirorisingh Bainsla, had begun the ‘Mahapadav’ in support of their demand for five per cent quota on July 26 at Penchla-Mode in Karauli district.

Brought by the previous Vasundhara Raje Government, the Rajasthan Reservation Bill, 2008, providing five per cent reservation in jobs to Gurjjars and three other communities and 14 per cent to the economically poor among the forward castes was cleared by the Governor last night.

The gubernatorial assent to the bill generated much jubilation among Gurjjars who gave rousing reception to their top leaders at several places today showering them with flower petals and offering them "safas" (head gears) as a mark of victory.

Expressing his gratitude to the Governor S K Singh and the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot for clearing the pending bill, Bainsla announced the end of the agitation and asked protesters to return to their homes and send their kids to schools for education to enable them to avail of the quota benefit.

Meanwhile Gehlot said a committee headed by Rajasthan Chief Secretary will be set up soon to implement the provisions of the bill.
