More than 100 British-era heritage buildings have fallen prey to vagaries of weather in the past two decades.
The remaining, out of which at least 37 fall within Shimla’s heritage zone, need urgent restoration.
Taking up the issue at the conference of Governors, Prabha Rau made a plea to to depute a team of national experts to inspect the buildings and suggest measures to maintain them.
One of the prominent buildings include 175-year-old Barnes Court— now state Raj Bhawan where the Peace Accord (1972) between Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistan PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was signed.
Drawing Centre’s attention towards immediate renovation of the buildings,
Rau said the restoration work for Raj Bhawan and Town Hall should be sanctioned immediately.
She asked for a financial assistance of Rs 11 crore for renovation of these two buildings.
Rau demanded an increase for the state’s quota in the armed forces.
She asked for implementation of one rank one pension scheme for ex-servicemen.
Stressing the need for modernisation of the police force, Rau asked for a grant of Rs 30 crore per annum. She said it is important to fight against the drug menace. Referring to the Pareechu lake threat, Rau said there is a need for monitoring the lake through satellites.
Other issues such as permission of the Centre to allow the state government to levy 10 paisa per unit generation tax on all power projects and implement provision of 12 per cent free electricity for all the power projects commissioned prior to year 1990, beside grant of legitimate share of the state in all the power projects like Bhakra dam, Dehar dam, Pong dam were also raised during the conference.
