Guwahati-based writer arrested, sent to custody

The Guwahati police have arrested Nilim Dutta, executive director of a Guwahati-based organisation called Strategic Research & Analysis Organisation, on charges of fraud, with a court remanding him in judicial custody.

"We had been looking for him for the past few months after two different FIRs were lodged with the police, one by an individual and the other by a hotel, complaining that Dutta had duped them, until we tracked him down in an apartment in the city on late Saturday evening," A P Tiwari, SSP, Guwahati City, told The Indian Express on Monday.

Dutta has also written for several publications. He also wrote an article ('Don't blame the immigrant', August 3, 2012) in The Indian Express on the Bodoland violence, responding to a piece in this newspaper on the same issue by Election Commissioner H S Brahma.

Two other persons, Smita Dutta (Dutta's sister) and Janoki Boro, a domestic help, have been also arrested. The SSP said Dutta would have managed to escape had he not hurt himself in both his legs while jumping out of the first-floor balcony when the police raided the flat which he had taken on rent.

While two cases were already registered against him in the Dispur police station last year, three more cases were filed against him on Sunday, of which one was by his own driver. The Geetanagar police station in the city had arrested him in 2004 following similar allegations, the SSP said.

"While there are now six cases registered against him in Guwahati, what we have gathered is that the Delhi Police had also registered a case against him last year," Assam DGP J N Choudhury told The Indian Express.

The DGP said Dutta was in the habit of checking into different hotels by making some initial deposits and then disappearing leaving huge sums unpaid.
