The H1N1 virus is showing no sign of retreating in the city, with 16 students from B K Birla Residential School at Talegaon testing positive. On Monday, the district health authorities also confirmed the death of 18-year-old Renuka Jadhav of Umbarde taluka from Satara district on Saturday, making it the city’s 35th H1N1 death.

District collector Chandrakant Dalvi said at the Talegaon school, there were 11 students, including one teacher, who tested positive on Monday from among 26 whose throat swabs were collected. Of the five children who were infected earlier, one child is in the ICU at KEM Hospital and the other at Jehangir Hospital. Both are stable now, said Dr Ashok Mehta,Joint Director,Health.

There are 480 students at B K Birla School out of which most have gone home and on Monday only 109 were present. Parents of the 11 children who had tested positive and had already reached their native place have been sent e-mails to take precautionary measures and either home quarantine or admit them to isolation wards in the hospitals there.

The district administration has stepped up measures to prevent the spread of swine flu by contacting 56 children the school students might have met. “Since this is a special case,we are administering Tamiflu to all the students,” said Dalvi.

Meanwhile,Renuka, who was admitted to Sassoon Hospital on Saturday, died within an hour at the hospital due to ARDS. Her throat swab had been taken subsequently.

Dalvi said the next fortnight will be crucial as there was crowding during the recent Ganeshotsav and said people have to be extra cautious about flu-like symptoms. He said the school authorities were taking measures to ensure that students who reported sick were sent home. A total of 95 people are admitted in various hospitals with flu-like symptoms.
