Agnirup Sarkar, son of economist Abhirup Sarkar, was declined admission by two universities allegedly because of emails sent by a friend who hacked his email.
An economics graduate from St Xaviers,Abhirup had done his postgraduation from the University of Essex. He applied to foreign universities for a PhD. However, two universities responded that he had been initially selected but as he had declined to take admission, his application had been rejected.
A police report was filed with the cybercrime cell. Tracing the IP address of the sent emails,it was found that the mails refusing the admission offers were sent from the computer of Soumyatanu Mukherjee, one of Abhirups close friends.
Mukherjee is also a meritorious student of St Xaviers.
The complaint was filed on April 27. Mukherjee is being tried in court. If proved guilty,he could get three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh, said a senior officer of the cyber crime cell.
