The BJP has taken objection to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde's remarks that he will take a decision on the mercy petition of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru after the winter session of Parliament. The BJP on Tuesday demanded Guru be hanged before the anniversary of Parliament attack, which falls on Thursday.

"The Home Minister's remarks appear to be suggesting that he is avoiding taking a decision fearing that the MPs are against the execution. Why is he trying to send such a message?" BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.

"If the government hangs Guru on December 13, there can't be any better way to pay homage to the martyrs of the attack on Parliament...It should hang the attacker of Parliament during the session of the House," Hussain said.

"The President has returned seven cases of mercy petitions to the Home Ministry. This includes the case of Guru. Because of Parliament session, I have not been able to devote my attention to these cases. Once the session is over, I will decide what has to be done with each of these cases," Shinde had said on Monday.

The BJP's criticism indicated that the party may make it an issue on Thursday.
