Three days after she jumped off the third floor of her college building in Thakurganj following harassment by college staff and students,the 17-year-old undergraduate student succumbed to her injuries Friday.
The family members of Shumbul Ishaq,a first-year student at MC Saxena College of Pharmacy,said doctors were negligent and waited too long before putting her on ventilator,which,Ishaqs uncle Shariq said,resulted in her death.
The family also accused the police of not taking action against students or college authorities even though it had lodged a case of abetment to suicide against them. police,the family added,did not even record the girls statement.
Responding to the allegations,Chowk Cirlce Officer Sarvesh Kumar Mishra said the girl was in no condition to give a statement. He said he had asked doctors if Ishaqs statement could be recorded before a magistrate,but they turned down the request citing her deteriorating condition.
Mishra added a panel of doctors is currently conducting the post-mortem and that they would soon receive the report.
A resident of Saadatganj,Ishaq had complained of being humiliated by two students and Head of the Department of English at her college. Her uncle said the teacher had rebuked her for not knowing English and asked her to go home and become a housewife like her mother.
She was admitted to King George Medical Universitys trauma centre with multiple injuries on her head,right leg and waist,the police had earlier said,and added that the doctors had put her on ventilator after her condition deteriorated. She died in the wee hours of Friday.
The girls brother Adil,however,said the girl had started attending college for last 8-9 days only and had not given the family any specific information about ragging or any other harassment.
