Haridevpur deaths: ‘Man killed family before hanging himself’

Police investigating into the death of members of a family at Haridevpur,a locality in city’s southern outskirts,believe that Mridul Kanti Das (63) killed his relatives before committing suicide by hanging himself.

Police investigating into the death of members of a family at Haridevpur,a locality in city’s southern outskirts,believe that Mridul Kanti Das (63) killed his relatives before committing suicide by hanging himself.

Citing the primary report of the postmortem,police sources said that there was a long interval between the timing of Kanti’s death and his other family members.

On Monday morning,while Das was found hanging from the ceiling of his room,the bodies of his wife Nibha (56),daughter Anindita (25),and Nibha’s maternal uncle Anil Ghosh (95) were found lying on beds in two different rooms. The back of their heads had been smashed and Anindita’s face was disfigured.

Close relatives of the family also said that Das was suffering from depression and had a tumor in his throat for the last few months.

“Though doctors had told him that there was no reason to worry,he was certain that he had cancer and was suffering from depression,” said a relative. According to them,he had also consulted a psychiatrist.

According to sources,the family had a late dinner and was watching television together till about 1:30 am on Monday morning. Nibha’s maternal uncle had gone to bed early. After the rest of his family members were was asleep,Das woke up around 2:30 am and first hit his wife from behind with a rod. He then killed Anindita and Ghosh.

“The blows were so strong that all the three died,” said a police officer.

Not certain that they had died; Das got a crowbar and struck each body several times. His clothes were spattered with blood. Soon after this,Mrinal hanged himself from the ceiling.

But police at the same time are not ruling out foul play or involvement of any outsider.
