Britain’s top departmental store Harrods will sell hand-rolled tea sourced from Happy Valley tea estate in Darjeeling under its own brand name. Chairman and managing director of Hritwik Investment Pvt Ltd Sanjoy Bansal said that the company’s estate had been chosen by Harrods to supply 1,400 kg of very special orthodox hand-rolled variety.

The tea had been priced between Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 per kg, Harrods tea and coffee consultant H Rahaman said. The garden at an altitude of 6,800 feet and established in 1854 was chosen from among 40 tea plantations in India for sourcing Darjeeling tea.

Bansal said that Harrods’ selection would brighten prospects of Darjeeling tea in the UK market. He said the tea variety commanded a high price since the entire processing was being done manually. By virtue of this, Harrods would launch handcrafted tea under its own brand name for the first time.
