A 23-Year-Old student, Kuldeep, died after a bullet from a police rifle hit him in the head early this morning in Bhiwani. Police said the death was an “unfortunate accident” — the gun was triggered when their vehicle lurched after hitting a large pothole. Kuldeep’s brother Vikas, who was present during the incident, however, said a group of drunk policemen had walked up and shot Kuldeep without provocation.

Angry residents and students torched police vehicles in protest on Monday. Schools, colleges and markets were shut. The Haryana government has ordered a magisterial probe and announced a Rs 5-lakh compensation and a job for a member of Kuldeep’s family. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda described the incident as “tragic and unfortunate”. “We have already arrested the head constable (Karmbir Singh) on charges of murder. Charges have also been arraigned against seven other policemen,” he said.

Hissar SP Anil Rao said a police vehicle chased a motorcycle carrying three men after it refused to stop at a barricade around midnight on the outskirts of Bhiwani town. “As our vehicle was moving alongside their motorcycle, a sudden pothole produced a jolt which pulled the trigger of a rifle that was placed in the vehicle. Since the window was open, it hit one of the boys. It was an unfortunate accident,” Rao said.

Kuldeep and Vikas were riding the bike along with a friend, Hukam Singh. According to Vikas, “We were returning from a feast in a nearby village. I don’t remember anyone even gesturing us to stop. Suddenly, a police vehicle came up to us. There were around eight-nine policemen inside, some of them in plainclothes. Their manner suggested they were inebriated.

Haryana police assassinate studentBy: G Krishnamurthy | 04-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Clearly this is a case of murder by drunk policemen in uniform. All stories by the police are just stories, and any resemblance to the actual events is purely coincidental. Wonder what the Government will do - succumb to pressure as usual, or punish the guilty.
bloody policeBy: raj | 04-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Shoot all the members of police forece involved in this incident the same way.compare Indian police with the rest of the world - they are the worst bunch of loosers. No manners - no shame- and they think they own the country. Bloody swines.
Set an exampleBy: Rajnish | 04-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward For a change people of Haryana must insist that guilty policemen are punished most severely. Man who pulled the trigger must be hanged. And if the incident is proven true, dismiss and imprison Hissar SP.
Failed SystemBy: Naajim | 04-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward The people of India have become lazy enough to do a right thing. In public, a leader says we will ban the liqour and in evening the gaurdians themselves drink.Authorities say "dont drink and drive",and themselves break the rule. " This Is Modern India".Among the police personals, half does not know the IPC rules. Now government has promised to give 5 lakhs compensation and job for one member of family. For that they have to take letter from collector and death certificate of the person. On submission they are given time. And about employment they say now there are no vacancies in that city. You need to go other areas. The file is rotated from one office and other office. The media that published the article itself forgets the thing."This Is Modern India".Being an India,it is my error to write an comment like this. But due to lack of education and support ,India is missing great talent which is shifted to other countries and it wil be going on and on and on.Because we dont want change. We dont want to develop. The centre issue 1000 crores on some project, but never checks whether it is implemented properly.Even the inspection team which should check for the project completion does only paper work.Bcoz we dont have time to develop, we have time to speak about religion, regionalism, movies, blogs, etc.
