After banning the use of plastic bags,Haryana is set to choke “land mafia” involved in illegal felling of trees in the ecologically sensitive Aravalli Hills zone.

On Friday, the World Environment Day,the state’s minister for forest and environment,Kiran Chaudhary, admitted that despite the Supreme Court ordering a ban on mining in the Aravalli-range area, felling of trees, haphazard construction and other illegal “non-forestry activities” continue in the region. “The apex court has ordered a complete ban on mining in Aravallis and this would be strictly enforced,” Chau-dhary said.

“We will also take all care to protect greenery of the range.”

She said,“The issue of illegal cutting of trees by builders and land mafias has been brought to my notice.”

Chaudhary also said the Haryana government will tighten the noose around industrial units emitting pollutants more than the permissible limit. She said Haryana Pollution Control Board officials have been asked to inspect all polluting units — else, she added, departmental action would be initiated against them.

Choudhary said the state government has banned polythene bags of less than 30 micron thickness and 8×12 inches in length but these are still used “rampantly”. Appealing to people to take the green pledge, she said,“The government can only make a law. But unless people stop the use of polythene bags and realise the harmful effects it has on the environment, the law won’t be successful.”
