Haryana is set to get another Sainik School with the state signing an MoU with the Defence Ministry to establish a school in Rewari district. The school, which will be set up on a 50 acre plot in Tappa Gothra Khori village, will be constructed at a cost of Rs 25 crore. It is set to start functioning from the next session.

“Southern Haryana has been the traditional recruitment ground for Defence Forces for many years. The school in Rewari district will fulfil a long-pending demand and enable youth of the region to avail of the excellent educational facilities and discipline inculcated in Sainik Schools,” said Minister of State for Defence Production Rao Inderjit Singh.

While the entire infrastructure will come up over the next five years, the school will start functioning on a temporary basis at the Primary School Building, Community Hall and Youth Hostel in Rewari Town, he added.

The second Sainik School in Haryana after Kunjpura takes up the number of such schools in the country to 23. The Ministry of Defence has also given ‘in principle’ approval for establishing new Sainik Schools at Chingchip (Mizoram), Ravangla (Sikkim) and Ambikapur (Chhattisgarh).

“The Ministry of Defence will contribute by providing three Service Officers as Principal, Headmaster and Registrar, NCC Staff, Physical Training Instructor and a limited number of scholarships to the wards of defence personnel studying in the school,” a Defence Ministry official said.

While the school will be set up under the aegis of the MoD, the state Government will provide basic infrastructure and equipment including salaries and other major expenditure. Besides the initial cost of Rs 25 crore, the state will bear a recurring expenditure of close to Rs 15 crore, the official said.

The first Sainik School in Haryana was set up at Kunjpura in Karnal District in 1961. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the Chief of the Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor are both alumni of the school.
