‘Hastinapur’ play bags Bhilwara Natya Puraskar

The play by K G Trivedi beat stiff competition from 30 entries.

‘Hastinapur’,a play depicting the age-old travails of women in society,has been adjudged the winner of the second edition of the Bhilwara Natya Puraskar,instituted by industrial group JLN Bhilwara.

The play by K G Trivedi beat stiff competition from 30 entries,including from reputed directors such as Nadira Babbar,Vijay Tendulkar and Ila Arun,to be declared the outstanding theatre production of the year and awarded a cash

prize of Rs 2 lakh.

The runner-up prize of Rs 1 lakh went to ‘Ek aur Dronacharya’ by Satish Mehta of Prayog Bhopal theatre group.

The award was instituted last year to encourage theatre performances in Hindi language.

The winners were announced after a theatre festival this week where the shortlisted groups performed to the judges and audiences.

‘Hastinapur’ used historical references to capture the discrimination against women in the male-dominated society.

“We compliment the winner and sincerely hope our small contribution will go a long way in encouraging the group to scale new heights,” said L N Jhunjhunwala,chairman emeritus,LNJ Bhilwara Group and founder of the award.

After a moderate response in its first year,the award received much more attention this time,receiving nominations from over eight states.

The organisers of the theatre festival said they hoped such endeavours would give a fresh boost to theatre talent in the country.
