Vikram Phadnis scored the most talked about showstopper yet this season (yes, showstoppers are back). The designers bridal line stuck closely to the textbook with yards of silks and velvets, floating around the models. Phadnis coup laying in roping in perennial bachelorette Sushmita Sen to showcase the showstopping bridal dress. (Irony, anyone?) As a coy Sush slowly walked down the ramp on Monday, whoops and hollers resoundedmore for the actress,we suspect, than for the over embellished bridal ensemble.
There was enough variety in the day to engage the fashion-weary observer. Imcha Imchen, who draws his inspiration from tribal arts and crafts, yet again showed a splendid variety of checkered shorts, dhotis and blazer, our only complaint being that weve seen all this before. Paromita Banerjee sprung a surprise with her wonderful line of angarakha wrap kalidar kurtas, yoke and ghera dresses and mulmul layered tops. The silk embroidery, the asymmetric sleeve details and the buta work made this line one of the striking ones of the morning.
The second show of the morning had Virtues putting up yet another bridal wear line without any experimentation. How much longer will we have to wait for bling-less bridal wear? Thankfully,Kiran and Meghnas Myoho stuck to the tried-and-tested earthy palate beige, ivory, amber and teal but got innovative with cuts and sleeves. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said for Vivek Kumar who was a huge disappointment; he stuck to jersey and net dresses, which have become a norm ever since Bollywood beauties started sporting them five years ago.
Mandira Wirk was the showstealer of the morning, with flowy skirts with bustiers, tunics with sexy backs and her favourite dhoti pants. We believe Wirk when she says,I design clothes that I would like to wear and I like sexy, feminine clothes. We hear you loud and clear, girl. And with Malaika Arora Khan as showstopper in an elegantly draped gown,we couldnt have asked for more. Anupamaa Dayals slinky dresses, with bold graphic prints and in various hues of blue were fun and feminine, but what really caught our fancy were the sequined harem pants. Disco fashion sure is back. And if Dayal was channelling the 80s,then Gauri and Nainika Karan continued to pay tribute to Old Hollywood, complete with flapper hair,Greta Garbo makeup and live jazz. The stark reds, blacks and white screamed glamazon, while the outsize bows and roses gave us a Valentino vibe.
Stunning it was,but a little more innovation would be helpful, girls.
But if we had to cast our vote for the most fun collection of the evening,it would have to be Swapnil Shindes collection. Inspired by games, the show began with the classic Super Mario theme, which instantly got the audience applauding. The clothes lived upto expectationsplayful balloon dresses, jostled alongside sexy tubes and flowing maxis. Asymmetrical cuts, zippers used as embellishments and clashing colours made for an exhilarating show.
