A day before the next hearing of the 26/11 trial in Pakistan,New Delhi today sought some more clarifications on Pakistan’s request to send a judicial commission here to meet the magistrate and the investigating officer who recorded Ajmal Amir Kasab’s statement. While saying it is still examining this request,India has asked Pakistan to act fast on pending Indian requests related to the case.

It’s learnt that India has specifically asked the status of its requests for voice samples of all the accused as well as the necessary legal evidence available in Pakistan on David Coleman Headley, the Pakistan-born US terror operative who scouted the 26/11 targets and passed it on to his patrons in ISI and the Lashkar-e-Toiba. The Indian response was handed over today to Pakistani authorities, both here and in Islamabad.

India wanted the voice samples of Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi,Zarar Shah and others arrested in this case. India has pointed out that this is vital to carry forward the investigative process here while reminding Pakistan of the assurance Interior Minister Rehman Malik gave to Home Minister P Chidambaram during the latter’s visit on providing these voice samples. While indicating that it is willing to cooperate on Islamabad’s request to send a judicial commission, sources said,New Delhi also underlined the need for the Pakistan government to act upon Indian requests. On the commission itself,India has asked Pakistan to further clarify panel’s scope as there are conflicting reports.

In its proposal, the Pakistan side has proposed a commission with two lawyers and one more person for coordination. The matter is also being examined by legal authorities here and in the case of the magistrate,an opinion was also sought from the Bombay High Court. New Delhi has conveyed that an early response to these clarifications will aid a quicker decision.

In this context, the Indian side also referred to its earlier proposal for arranging access via video-conferencing to the magistrate and the investigating officer as a measure of its commitment to address Pakistan’s legal requirements. This was, however, rejected by Pakistan.

On Headley, the Indian side reminded Pakistan about the queries it had sent some months ago. Headley went to Pakistan after almost every trip to India. The Pakistan-end of the investigation is clearly an important missing link. India has told Pakistan that it wants more detailed information on the absconders in the 26/11 case as well as other accomplices who have still not been identified.
